Today is Easter Sunday and with Easter eggs all the rage during this time with everyone being excited to hunt for the surprises inside, our Dishy Adventure features the Pinata cake.

Homebaker Raashida Shamsudeen who began the Brownie and Tart Company just a little after last year’s COVID-19 lockdown is bringing to the market something that has been abuzz on social media for ages — the Pinata cake.

“A pinata cake is basically pure chocolate goodness with a little surprise inside,” Raashida says showing us the geometric chocolate shell that holds a brownie cake within its dome. To get to the brownie, you have to smash the tempered chocolate with a little wooden hammer that comes with the package.

It’s a destructive yet delicious treat. Sinfully full of chocolate would be the phrase to describe the pinata cake as rich undertones of cocoa are highlighted in the fudge brownie while the sweetness of the white chocolate shell compliments it.

A stay-at-home mum to her 3-year-old, Raashida had no prior experience with the culinary arts however her brownies were always something her family looked out for during their gatherings and that slowly expanded into her taking orders online and through word-of-mouth.

“Everything was self-taught and it was through learning and experience that I was able to create a perfect brownie which in my case is something that is decadent and gooey inside. I, then started working with chocolate and I am in love,” Raashida laughs. Looking at trends and wanting to experiment to satisfy her clientele, Raashida always tries to create a product for the ‘season’.

For Easter, she has sweet little chocolate Easter eggs filled with smarties and for Christmas she added hot chocolate bombs to her menu as well.

Her Pinata cakes come either in a geometric pattern or heart shape filled with a brownie cake which is her speciality or chocolates of the customer’s choice. “One of the sweeter experiences I had with this cake was when a customer wanted to do a gender reveal cake and had me fill the cake with chocolates of that colour,” Raashida recalls.
